    ✨Allergies at Christmas ✨ Christmas is a time ✨Allergies at Christmas ✨

Christmas is a time of celebration with festive food and sweet treats but it can also be a time of increase risk of reactions for individuals with allergies. Celebrations within your own home are generally easy to control as you're the one hosting and providing the food but when celebrating with others outside of the safety of your home, it may take little more planning.

As the festive season approaches, often we tend to dine out more, and enjoy seasonal food & drinks which may increase the risk of accidental contact with foods you may be allergic to.

This lead me to investigate festive foods & drinks that may contain allergens, that you might not be aware of. There are allergen free versions of these products so always make sure to check the ingredients to ensure it does not contain your allergens.

🍸Often smoothies or mixed alcoholic drinks can contain allergens that may not be labelled in the ingredients list as the recipes change frequently.
Equipment and utensils may be reused and may not be cleaned thoroughly after each use, particularly utensils which are used to add toppings.
Be aware of cross contact with drink stirrers, shakers and other utensils used to mix drinks.

➡️Please feel free to share with family & friends to ensure everyone stays Allergy Safe this Christmas ⛄🎄

    ✨Falling leaves = Rising Allergies ✨ 🍂Even ✨Falling leaves = Rising Allergies ✨

🍂Even though it's satisfying to kick your feet through the Autumn leaves, you should really consider what your actually kicking around . . .

Most of us are aware that moulds grow in warm, damp environments but during Autumn mould spores can be found in the piles of leaves that we kick our feet through. Mould & allergens thrive on damp conditions like decomposing leaves & compost heaps.

🧹These spores can be kicked up by autumn winds or by raking.
When leaves are raked, especially when wet, it can stir up pollen & mould, sending the allergens into the air causing allergy & asthma symptoms.

✅The best solution is to avoid moving the leaves but if that's not possible, you can wear a face mask to help reduce allergy symptoms. You should also change your clothes and wash your hands & face when your finished.

✅Try to keep leaves, grass & compost away from your house to reduce the number of mould spores that can enter your house through doors & windows.

✨ Central Heating -Indoor Allergies ✨ While ✨ Central Heating -Indoor Allergies ✨

While your central heating may bring warmth, it can have an affect on the relative humidity of your home by drying out the indoor air.

Excessively dry air can lead to:
🔸Dry, irritated sinus passages
🔸Itchy skin
🔸Cracked lips
🔸Sore itchy throat
🔸Aggravated respiratory ailments

☀️During the summer months, your heaters and radiators are likely to have gathered some allergens, namely dust mites, mould spores, pet dander and more. When you turn on your heater, these irritants can be distributed throughout the room, causing allergy and asthma symptoms.
Our homes are sealed for most of the winter and the heat is turned up- this reduces ventilation and allows allergen particles to build up inside your home.

🔥Many horizontal radiators have convector fins inside them, which are ridges between which heat transfers and is radiated out into the room. If these become dusty, less heat will be transferred between them and could spread dust and allergens around the room.

👉So the best way to reduce allergens collecting and recirculating into the room is to clean the radiators:
🔸Vacuum to get rid of dust in and around the radiator.
🔸Dust areas unreachable by a vacuum cleaner.
🔸Use a blast of hot air form a hair dryer to blow dust out of corners and ridges on the radiator.
🔸Ensure that Central Heating Pipes are unblocked

🏠Along with the affect on humans, heating symptoms and dry air can also affect your home.
A decrease in moisture in your indoor environment can also affect your physical home and the belongings inside it, causing warping, cracking and separation in wood products. Humidifiers help to alleviate these symptoms and side affects and help maintain a comfortable relative humidity level.
🌡️If your unsure about the relative humidity in your home, a hygrometer can determine it for you.

There may not be a quick way to remove allergens from your environment all year-round however there are ways to help reduce exposure and therefore reduce the risk of allergic reactions.

🦮🐈Allergies to pets are common, especially among people who have other allergies or asthma. Cat allergies are about twice as common as dog allergies. Your body's immune system reactions to proteins in the pets dander, saliva or urine.

🦄Hypoallergenic Pets??
People with animal allergies may be more sensitive to some breeds than others. However a "hypoallergenic " "non-allergic" dog or cat does not exist.

✨Mould- Indoor Allergens ✨ If your allergies ✨Mould- Indoor Allergens ✨

If your allergies seem to get worse when it rains, you may have a mould allergy. Mould and Mildew are types of fungi that develop on wet materials. The "seeds" called spores, travel through the air and deposit on surfaces.
Inhaling spores can cause allergic reactions or trigger asthma in some people and this can occur year round.

Basic symptoms of Mould Allergy are:
🔸Sneezing
🔸Coughing
🔸Watery, itchy eyes
🔸Postnasal drip

Your asthma symptoms may get worse if you have asthma and are exposed to mould.

The best way to stop symptoms & allergic reactions is to reduce your exposure to mould.

In today's post I've included further information on mould:

✨ Dust Mites ✨ Indoor allergens include dust ✨ Dust Mites ✨

Indoor allergens include dust mites, mould, pet dander, cockroach droppings and other allergens.

Dust Mites may be the most common trigger of year-round allergies and asthma. They are on every continent except for Antarctica. Virtually every house has dust mites but you may not realise they are in your home unless someone has an allergy to Dust Mites. Dust Mites are generally harmless to most people, they don't carry disease however they can cause allergic reactions in individuals with allergies to dust and asthmatics.

Dust Mites are too small to be visible to the naked human eye but under a microscope they present as tiny white bugs. They thrive in temperatures of 20-25 degrees Celsius and humidity levels of 70% or greater.

🔶So today's post focuses on Dust Mites:
🔸What are Dust Mites
🔸Where are Dust Mites found
🔸What increases your exposure to Dust Mites
🔸What reduces your exposure to Dust Mites

The aim of this post is to educate others on Indoor Allergies and to understand what might be the triggers to their allergy symptoms during the Winter months.
